LEXINGTON, KY – Kentucky based Ananda Hemp, a manufacturer of legal, non-psychoactive hemp extract, commended U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell upon his announcement of the pending introduction of “The Hemp Farming Act of 2018.” Leader McConnell’s bill, which is co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rand Paul (R-KY), would permanently remove hemp from regulation as a controlled substance and treat it as an agricultural commodity. Similar legislation, H.R. 3530, the “Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2017,” was introduced last year by Rep. James Comer (R-KY).
“Hemp has played a foundational role in Kentucky’s agricultural heritage, and I believe that it can be an important part of our future,” Senator McConnell said. “I am grateful to join our Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles in this effort. He and his predecessor, Jamie Comer, have been real champions for the research and development of industrial hemp in the Commonwealth. The work of Commissioner Quarles here in Kentucky has become a nationwide example for the right way to cultivate hemp. I am proud to stand here with him today, because I believe that we are ready to take the next step and build upon the successes we’ve seen with Kentucky’s hemp pilot program.”
“The hemp industry is very grateful to Leader McConnell for his strong leadership over the years on behalf of providing Kentucky farmers – and the whole U.S. agricultural commodity – this exciting new economic opportunity,” stated Ananda Hemp’s Director of Global Production, Brian Furnish, an 8th generation tobacco farmer from Cynthiana. “Leader McConnell’s persistence and commitment has gotten us to this point – through his work on the 2014 Farm Bill and subsequent legislation that created today’s hemp pilot programs. There’s no better person to help get us across the finish line.”
Ananda Hemp has been cultivating and processing industrial hemp in the state of Kentucky since 2014 and contracts directly with Kentucky farmers. Last year, Ananda Hemp harvested nearly 500 acres of hemp produced in Kentucky attributing to increased farming contracts as well as permanent and seasonal employment in the region.
“The tremendous leadership and vision of Senator McConnell and Congressman Comer underpin the future of several hemp-based industries that will create many thousands of jobs in the US agriculture and manufacturing sectors.” Stated Eric Wang, Ananda Hemp’s CEO. “Clarity and certainty on the future of industrial hemp has been critical to our decision to invest over $20m into this forming industry. We owe deep appreciation to Senator McConnell for his strong commitment and steady leadership on this issue and look forward to continuing to invest heavily in infrastructure and job creation.”
Ananda Hemp eagerly awaits the introduction and eventual passing of The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 as an inevitable cornerstone that will continue to drive hemp-based industries in Kentucky.
