WKYT TV in Lexington, KY Spotlights Ananda Hemp
Cynthiana, Kentucky is ground zero for hemp. This 500-acre hemp farm in Harrison County is a farm that’s been years in the making.
In 2013, Brian Furnish, the 8th-generation farmer who grows the hemp, started working on legislation with Congressman Comer. His efforts helped pass Section 7606 of the 2014 Farm Bill. This key piece of legislation defined hemp as being distinct from marijuana. It also authorized state universities and agricultural departments to begin cultivating and studying the product.
We take a homegrown approach to farming with our clean, all-natural growing process and are the exclusive source of everything we grow. 100% of our products are grown and processed in the State of Kentucky. We don’t use pesticides or fungicides, and our products do not contain GMOs. Our farmers cultivate a robust, sustainable crop that is grown outdoors in Kentucky soil.
In the Fall of 2017, Ananda Hemp hosted two events at the Cynthiana, Kentucky farm. These events welcomed people to tour the farm, walk through the hemp fields, meet the farmer and see the laboratory facilities where the hemp is processed.
We want to bring a fiber mill from Australia to Kentucky next year which would require 5,000 acres. We could grow more in one factory than the entire state is growing right now.
Education is a crucial step to acquiring new customers. It’s important for people to know that we’re growing hemp, not marijuana, at a THC level at or below .3%. This means we are legal and in complete compliance with all laws at the state and federal levels. Education about the legality of what we’re doing is one part. Education around the many uses of hemp is still another.
Hemp can be used in paper and cardboard products, clothing and fabrics, plastic and building materials, fuel and nutrition. It’s a crop that is changing and will continue to change the world.
